Client Moving to
a New Domain?

Client is rebranding or switching to a new domain? We set up wildcard and individual redirect rules directly in Cloudflare on the old domain so every old URL forwards to the right page on the new one. The old domain needs to be on Cloudflare. The new domain can live anywhere.

Who this is for

Web designers and agencies handling a client rebrand where all old domain URLs need to forward cleanly to the new domain.

Client is rebranding and all old URLs need to forward to the new domain
A rebrand with no redirects means years of backlinks, bookmarks, and Google indexed pages going to 404 errors. We set up Cloudflare redirect rules on the old domain so every URL forwards correctly.
Old site URLs are still indexed by Google and sending visitors to broken pages
Google does not deindex old URLs overnight. Until the redirects are in place, anyone clicking an old result gets a broken page. We get the redirects live so no visitor lands on a 404.
Client has a new domain but the old one still gets traffic from links and backlinks
Backlinks from other sites pointing to the old domain represent SEO value that disappears without a 301 redirect. We preserve that equity by forwarding all old URLs to the right destination.
You need to preserve SEO equity from the old domain
Properly configured 301 redirects pass link equity to the new domain. We set them up at the Cloudflare level on the old domain so search engines follow the change. See also: Cloudflare support.
You moved a site to a new domain but forgot to set up redirects for old URLs
After the fact redirect setup is exactly what this service is for. We audit the old URL structure, set up wildcard and specific rules in Cloudflare, and confirm the key pages are redirecting correctly.
Client has multiple old domains all forwarding to one new site
Multiple old domains pointing to a single new domain is a common scenario after mergers or brand consolidations. We set up the redirect rules across all old domains. See also: DNS support.

Everything we handle in the domain change.

One session. The old domain needs to be on Cloudflare. That is where we build the redirect rules. The new domain can be hosted anywhere.

Old Domain Must Be on Cloudflare
The redirect rules live inside Cloudflare on the old domain, so the old domain’s DNS must be managed through Cloudflare. If it is not already there, we get it moved first. The new domain can be hosted or managed anywhere.
SSL Confirmed on the Old Domain
Cloudflare’s Universal SSL needs to be active on the old domain or browsers will block the redirect before it fires. We verify SSL is working on the old domain before any redirect rules go live.
Wildcard Redirect Rule in Cloudflare
We build a wildcard redirect rule in Cloudflare that forwards every URL on the old domain to the matching path on the new domain. So olddomain.com/about goes to newdomain.com/about automatically. No page left behind.
Individual Redirects for Renamed Pages
If any pages moved to a different URL on the new domain, the wildcard alone will not catch them. We set up specific redirect rules for those pages so old links and bookmarks still land somewhere useful.
301 Redirects for SEO
All redirects are set as 301 permanent redirects, which tells Google the move is intentional and passes link equity from the old domain to the new one. This is the right way to change domains without losing search rankings.
Test Every Redirect Before We Close
We walk through the site and verify that the homepage, key inner pages, and any custom redirects are all returning 301s and landing on the correct destination. The session does not end until every redirect checks out.
Also need to update email on the new domain?
If the client is also moving their email to the new domain, that is a separate session. We offer Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 domain changes as standalone services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the website domain change service.

Will the site go down during the domain change?
No. We set up the new domain alongside the existing one before cutting anything over. The old domain stays live the entire time, so there is no window where the site is unreachable. Visitors on the new domain start hitting the site as soon as DNS propagates.
How does the wildcard redirect work exactly?
We create a redirect rule in Cloudflare that matches any request to the old domain and forwards it to the same path on the new domain. So olddomain.com/services/web-design goes to newdomain.com/services/web-design automatically. It catches every page without needing to list them individually.
What if some pages have different URLs on the new domain?
The wildcard rule handles pages that kept the same URL structure. For pages that moved to a different path, we set up individual redirect rules on top of the wildcard so those old URLs still land somewhere specific instead of the homepage.
Will changing domains hurt SEO?
A domain change always causes some temporary fluctuation in rankings while Google recrawls. Using 301 permanent redirects is the correct way to signal the move and pass link equity to the new domain. Skipping redirects or using 302 temporary redirects is what causes lasting SEO damage.
How long should we keep the old domain active?
At minimum 12 months. This gives Google time to fully recrawl and reindex the new domain, and ensures any backlinks or bookmarks pointing at the old domain keep working. We recommend keeping the old domain and the Cloudflare redirects active indefinitely if renewal cost is reasonable.
Do you need access to our hosting or just Cloudflare?
We only work inside Cloudflare for the redirect setup. We do not need hosting access. You will need to give us access to the Cloudflare account that manages the old domain. If the old domain is not yet on Cloudflare, we handle getting it moved over as part of the session.

How a domain redirect setup works

Share Cloudflare access for the old domainThe old domain needs to be on Cloudflare. Share access to the account and tell us the new domain and any specific URL patterns that need custom redirect rules (not just the homepage).
We set up wildcard and individual redirect rulesWe configure Cloudflare redirect rules to forward all old domain traffic to the correct pages on the new domain. Wildcard rules handle the bulk of URLs, specific rules handle custom patterns.
We test every redirect pattern before closingHomepage, interior pages, and any known high-traffic URLs all tested. Redirect chains confirmed as single-hop 301s. We do not close until every key URL is confirmed redirecting correctly.
