Who this is for

Web designers and agencies taking over a client domain with a messy DNS zone full of stale records, conflicts, and entries from previous agencies.

You took over a domain and the DNS zone has records from five different agencies
Stale A records, duplicate MX entries, old TXT records from cancelled services, and CNAME chains that go nowhere. We audit the full zone and document what each record is actually for before touching anything.
Client is seeing email delivery failures and you suspect old conflicting records
Multiple SPF records, duplicate MX entries with wrong priorities, and old DKIM selectors all cause delivery failures. We identify which records are causing the problem and clean them up. See also: email deliverability issues.
You are about to migrate a site and need the DNS cleaned up first
Starting a migration with a messy DNS zone is risky. We clean and document the zone before the migration starts so the cutover is predictable. See also: site migration service.
There are duplicate MX records, old SPF records, and CNAME conflicts in the zone
CNAME records that conflict with MX records, multiple SPF records that invalidate each other, and duplicate entries all need to be resolved before they cause problems.
Client switched email providers twice and old records are still there
Every email platform migration leaves behind stale TXT, MX, and CNAME records. We identify which belong to the current provider and remove everything else.
You want a clean documented record set before making any further changes
A full audit that produces a documented record of every DNS entry, what it points to, and what service it supports. A clean baseline before any future work starts.

Everything we clean up and fix.

One session covers the full zone audit and all the fixes that come with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about DNS cleanup and zone audits.

How do I know if my client’s DNS zone actually needs cleaning?
Common signs include orphaned records pointing to servers that no longer exist, duplicate MX records, SPF records with too many lookups, old CNAME entries from previous tools or platforms, and mismatched nameserver records. If the DNS history is long or multiple people have edited it over the years, a cleanup is almost always worth doing.
Will a DNS cleanup cause any downtime for my client’s site?
No, if done correctly. We audit first, flag what is safe to remove versus what is uncertain, and make changes carefully. We never delete a record without confirming it is not actively used. Records that look unused but cannot be confirmed are left in place with a note.
What is the difference between DNS cleanup and regular DNS support?
DNS support is fixing a specific problem: a record is wrong, something is not resolving, or a change needs to be made. DNS cleanup is a full audit of the entire zone to find orphaned records, redundant entries, and configuration issues that are not causing a problem yet but could. Cleanup is preventative. Support is reactive.
What if there are records we do not recognize?
We research them. Unknown records often belong to old tools, marketing platforms, or services the client no longer uses. We identify what each record was for, confirm whether it is still needed, and remove it only if we can verify it is safe to do so.
How long does a DNS cleanup session take?
Most cleanups are completed in a single 30 minute session for straightforward zones. Zones with a long history, many subdomains, or records tied to multiple third party services may take up to an hour. We tell you upfront after reviewing the zone how long to expect.

How a DNS cleanup session works

Share DNS access and tell us what services are active on the domainDNS provider login and a list of known active services: hosting, email platform, any third-party tools. The more context you have, the faster we can identify what should stay and what should go.
We audit every record and clean up what should not be thereWe export the full zone, identify every record and what it is for, flag stale entries and conflicts, and remove or correct them. We document every change we make.
We verify all active services are still pointing correctly before closingSite loading confirmed, email flowing, subdomains resolving, third-party services connected. We do not close until every active service is verified working with the cleaned zone.
